Women In Jazz: The Legends, Their Voices, Their Music

Laura Landsberg and her outstanding band will take you on a ride through the rich history of music’s most inspirational and groundbreaking woman in jazz. With Laura’s vocal versatility, David Restivo on piano, Paul Landsberg on guitar, Rob Fahie on bass, and Steven Parish on drums, this will surely be an evening of music not to be missed.

Laura Landsberg was born in London, England, raised in Vancouver, and now lives in Nelson. She studied at Grant MacEwan University, as well as with Bobby McFerrin, Rhiannon, David Worm, Axel Thiemer, Dee Daniels, Kiran Ahluwalia, Joey Blake and many others. Laura has been the featured soloist with the Universal Gospel Choir, the Spokane Jazz Orchestra and the Vancouver Ensemble for Jazz Improvisation (VEJI), and has played with Hugh Fraser, Donnie Clark, Chris Brubeck, and Ian McDougall.

David Restivo is an award-winning pianist and composer and one of Canada’s most respected and influential jazz artists. A 3-time winner of the National Jazz Awards’ Pianist of the Year Award, and JUNO Award winner he has worked with many amazing artists including Boss Brass, Tentet, the Mike Murley Quintet, Kenny Wheeler, John Abercrombie, Jerry Bergonzi, Mel Tormé, the Woody Herman Orchestra, Pat LaBarbera, George Garzone, Randy Bachman (BTO/Guess Who), and Molly Johnson.

Paul Landsberg was born in the Bronx, and grew up in New Jersey. Paul studied, and later taught, at Berklee College of Music in Boston. During that time he traveled with a top-40 cover band and by his early-30s, when he moved to Nelson, the guitarist had spent two decades playing and performing. An original faculty member at Selkirk College, Paul Landsberg retired in 2017 after a 28-year career.

Rob Fahie, originally from Ottawa, moved to Nelson in 2013 where he has become popular on the local music scene. He attended McGill University for his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance and then received a full scholarship to the University of Colorado to study a Master of Music Degree. Rob has performed at prestigious venues around the world, including “The Blue Note” and “Carnegie Hall”.

DrummerSteven Parish studied at Berklee College of Music, as well as privately with Frankie Dunlop, Frank Malabe, and the great Buddy Rich. Mentored by the legendary Les Paul, Steven’s also worked with for Cub Koda, Ian Hunter, Joe Bouchard of Blue Öyster Cult and Rap artist Stezo-E.
