Clerel, with opening act Blackout Summer, at Music in the Park

July 21, 2022 @ 6:15 pm - 8:00 pm

Local rock-punk youngsters meet classic soul and vintage R n’ B from Montreal.

Starting off tonight’s show at 6.15 pm, “Blackout Summer” is made up of 18-year-old vocalist and bass guitarist Rhyan Johnstone, 19-year-old lead guitarist Finley Kinghorn and 17-year-old drummer Reid Erickson. They love to cover rock and punk tunes from the 1980s to the early 2000s and have started writing their ow originals. The trio has performed at Castlegar’s Spring Fling, Sunfest and Kootenay Festival and at Nelson’s Thursday Socials. But their biggest show so far has been at the CannaFest pre-party in 2019.

Breakout Montreal-based singer-songwriter “Clerel” brings his classic soul and vintage R n’ B sound to Music in the Park with his duo. Hailing from French Cameroon and dubbed the next ‘Leon Bridges of Canada’ Clerel already has big fans at the Steven Colbert Show, who featured him in their #AtHome series in 2020. His warm voice captivates and takes your breath away, winning over audiences in seconds.

Clerel released his first beautiful EP of “Songs Under the Guava Tree” in 2019, shortly after uploading his first Youtube video in 2017. He grew up listening to music ranging from church hymns to French chanson. He’s already opened for Mavis Staples at Pop Montreal, appeared on La Voix, and completed a European promo tour in Paris and Brussels. More info.

“If this guy doesn’t explode and become a superstar, I don’t know what’s happening.” – Laurent Saulnier, President, Montreal Jazz Fest, in Montreal Gazette
