When a once famous filmmaker (Stellan Skarsgård) chooses to tell a story drawn from a painful family tragedy he reopens old wounds. With the new film, Gustav’s estranged daughters are forced back into his orbit. Nora (Renate Reinsve), a brilliant stage actress who refused the role Rachel (Elle Fanning) now inhabits, and Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas), the steady sister caught between them. As art and life collide, resentments surface, loyalties are tested, and the line between creation and exploitation blurs. With masterful performances by Skarsgård, Reinsve, Fanning, and Lilleaas, director Joachim Trier (The Worst Person in the World) delivers a deeply moving drama about the fragile ties that bind us and the sacrifices we make for legacy.
